Schedule to Exam 2

Date Day Topics
9/18FriGo over Exam 1. Continued with Chapter 13 - when over ionic vs covalent compounds. Writing electron dot formulas for the representative elements (symbols with dots around them).
9/21MonPolar vs Non-polar bonds. I discussed how a PARTIAL charge develops in a molecule. Any partial (-) charge must be accompanied by a partial (+) charge. Dipole moments are measured and the units are debye units. Electronegativity (EN) is a scale from 0 to 4.0 and relates to electron affinity. Know the periodic trend for EN.
9/22Tue
9/23Wedmore on bonding. Writing e- dot formulas. The octet rule. Showed the first 10 alkanes (hydrocarbons).
9/24Thu
9/25Fri More on writing electron dot structures. How most all the 2nd row elements obey the octet rule. Organic chemistry structures and the "looks" of certain elements (C, N, O, F, Br, Cl, I, and H) in an electron dot/line structure. Introduced and defined formal charge. "Best" structure minimizes formal charge. Showed the e- dot structure for carbonate. Drew 3 equivalent structures and put doubleheaded arrows between them. Defined and explained RESONANCE structures. Defined Bond Order. Carbonate's C-O bonds have bond orders of 1.33. Drew a "hybrid" structure for carbonate. Also defined and explained the concept of delocalization of electrons. Talked a little about upcoming molecular orbitals where the electrons are delocalized around several atoms.
Homework 4 due by 11:30 PM
9/28MonExceptions to the octet rule (over and under). More on resonance. Worked many examples exceeding octet rule - also calculated formal charge on these structures.
9/29Tue
9/30Wed Start Section 13.13 on VSEPR theory and molecular geometries. Introduce Valence Bond (VB) or Localized Electron (LE) theory (Chapter 14). Hybridizing atomic orbitals to get the shapes (geometries) we need.
